Monkeys With Machetes began as a 3 piece Heavy Rock band in March of 2011, under the name Serotonin. Original members Colby Adams-Simms, retains his position as Rhythm Guitarist and Vocalist along with Marcus Perry as Drummer. However, in early October it was unanimously decided that Keith Anderson would switch from bassist, to Lead Guitar player.
After several months of writing, and a hand full of bassists, such as "some metal guy", Antonio Changanaqui, and ex bassist of Mercy Chris Stone.
The position would be filled by Bennett Skarratt.
Five days after the joining of Bennett, Serotonin played their debut show as Monkeys with Machetes late December of 2011.
Finally the band was playing all over Hamilton, tho in the most bizarre show line up's for the Rock band. Opening for bands like, This Is Death Valley, Dr.Acula, and a huge verity of Metal/DeathCore bands.
"We have played for metal heads who wanted nothing more then to tare each other apart in the pit... but we were not a metal band... People we're "Throwing down" whatever the fuck that is, to our songs..It was a very strange setting for our kind of music" says Colby. "It was the metal shows that really impacted our writing after awhile, Blacking Out, I'm Going to Hell, we're inspired to be heavier without giving into the full metal idealistic. If metal shows we're the only gigs we could get, then we would play them but we would do things our way". (early 2012)
In June of 2012 bassist, Bennett Skarratt, was asked to leave due to band complications. And Eric Baldry was asked to join MwM.
No album has been released by Monkeys With Machetes yet, the official band statement is "we just can't afford it..we're all pretty broke".
